House to Vote on Right-to-Work

Daily Athenaeum – Union leaders in West Virginia are angry over the state’s right-to-work legislation expected to pass this year. The House of Delegates is expected to vote today on the bill after a last-minute amendment from the judiciary committee. Read

Experts agree that the legislation, which 25 other states have already passed, will drive down union membership. The legislation will prohibit employees from being fired if they refuse to pay union fees.

“Union membership will decline as a result of right-to-work,” said John Deskins, director of West Virginia University’s Bureau of Business and Economic Research.

That’s because when unions negotiate with an employer, any resolution they reach will benefit all employees, not just members of the union who pay union fees.
