According to the study, the Mountain State receives a total of $144 million in federal funds for childcare subsidies. Federal subsidies affect what services childcare programs can provide, and how affordable care is for families.
Federal support can help expand access, improve program quality, and reduce costs for parents. The study found West Virginia received $1,651 in federal subsidies for each of its 87,000 kids under the age of five. Travis Wooten, the program director at Necco, says there is one big reason West Virginia is so high on the list.
