Letter to the Editor: Hope Scholarship and Public School Funding

Hampshire Review – The Hope Scholarship is an education savings account program available for K-12 students. It is an entitlement program that allows parents to use the state portion of their child’s education funding to provide individualized schooling for their child. For the 2024-2025 school year, just under $5,000 is being provided to each scholarship student.  This is expected to increase to as much as $5,500 per child in the 2025-26 school year. The WV Department of Revenue estimates the Hope Scholarship could cost $110 million next fiscal year and, when all West Virginia students become eligible in fiscal year 2027, the cost is expected to increase to more than $300 million annually.
