I stand corrected. That should be the year-round mission, no matter the age, no matter the holiday, presents under the tree or not. No matter how close. No matter how far away. Reassure. Reaffirm.
This news business can be brutal in that regard. We run across these terrible stories, from near and far, and have to figure out how and if they fit into our news report.
