“Being an athlete on a team, you have to go through some pretty rigorous practices and other issues to be a part of that team, so I think it teaches you what it’s like to be a part of an organization,” said Fayette County Schools Superintendent Gary Hough on Wednesday, January 31, 2024. “I think it carries over in the classroom, but I also think it carries over into the real world.”
The non-partisan West Virginia Center for Budget and Policy data shows public school districts across the state will lose a projected 301 teachers and more than 60 service personnel in the 2024-25 school year, as, the organization estimated, nearly $22 million in state funding is funneled from public school districts into homeschools and private schools, via the Hope Scholarship program.
