Charleston, WV – The American Rescue Plan has been providing families with monthly installments of the Child Tax Credit since July, but the expanded program will expire on December 31 unless Congress acts to extend it. Families with children receive $300 for each child under age 6 and $250 for each child ages 6 to 17. According to the 2020 Census, West Virginia had 360,784 children under the age of 18. An estimated 93 percent (335,529) of children under the age of 18 in West Virginia are eligible.
The expanded Child Tax Credit encourages financial responsibility, parental employment, and strong families. A recent study showed that nearly 94 percent of parents said they planned to continue working or even work more upon receiving the credit.
